Surfing on Lanzarote is being increasingly more popular as the quality of the surf and the beauty of the beaches being more widely known.

There are a number of areas in Lanzarote which are ideal for surfing. Many surfers consider Lanzarote to be Europe’s equivalent of Hawaii and the winter months are the ideal time to visit the island for surfing as there are larger swells. Spending time in Lanzarote in winter is no hardship as the temperatures are not that different from the summer months. Average swells in winter can be around 6 feet and the northern coastlines are very popular with surfers as there are good conditions all year round. Many people also use Lanzarote as a base to reach other surfing sites such as those on the island of Graciosa.

The beach at Famara is one of the best on the island and has decent surf all year round. For this reason there are a number of surf schools located there. Beginners can learn there in relative safety. In addition there are beaches on other parts of the coastline which are good for surfers of all capabilities. This includes La Santa which has some of the best waves on the island. Some of the world’s leading surfers visit this beach to ride waves with names such as ‘Slab’ and ‘El Quemao’.

Close to La Santa is a small bay which has some great surfing conditions. The Morro Negro break is one of the most famous in the surfing world and is popular with the experienced surfer. This part of the coastline has no less than 14 sites which offer perfect surfing conditions for surfers of all levels of skill.

If you would like to try the surf on Lanzarote then you should consider hiring a car as many of the best surf spots are widely interspersed around the island and can be remote.
